5 Star Rated Licensing System
The NC Division
of Child Development has implemented a new licensing system in North
Carolina, known as the Five Star Rated Licensing System. This innovative
system of child care licensing is the first of it’s kind. The
Five Star License gives parents more information than the previous
type of license found in North Carolina. Child Care Centers and Family
Child Care Homes are evaluated to determine how many stars they will
receive. Through this type of licensing system, North Carolina child
care facilities have experienced many changes, such as lower child
to teacher ratios and child care professionals returning to school,
to gain higher levels of education. The Five Star Rated Licensing
System is divided into three components. In each of the three components,
centers and homes can receive up to 5 points. Adding the total number
of points in each area leads to the number of stars they will
receive. Once a center or home has been awarded their star license,
they can voluntarily
apply for a higher star in the future.
