Seat Check Saturday

scs-students Johnston County - Riverwood Elementary School students (L to R) Blake Wall, Ryan Mills, and Chelsea Russell, spent their Saturday volunteering at Johnston County's Seat Check Saturday Event sponsored by Safe Kids Johnston County. When asked why he was spending his Saturday helping at the event Ryan Mills stated "it was important to help save lives". Ryan, Blake and Chelsea worked as runners, assembled booster seats and entertained children while they were waiting to have their child passenger safety seats checked. "Safe passengers today, make safe drivers tomorrow", said Christina Peterson - Safe Kids Johnston County Coordinator, "what better way to emphasize safety to young children than allow them to help make other children safe." According to Safe Kids USA, 84% of child restraints show critical misuses. The most common form of misuse for all child restraints include loose safety belt attachment and loose harness straps. Additionally, booster seats are misused 41% of the      time.  Child restraints and seat belts, when installed and used properly, can prevent injuries and save lives. Seat Check Saturday is a nationwide event, held during child passenger safety week.

Selma Fire Department was on hand to help direct traffic, serve as runners, and share fire safety information.  After the event, the Fire Department staff destroyed the seats that were confiscated due to being recalled, expired, not knowing the history of the seat or having been in a wreck.
